The Bangladesh National Zoo is located in the beautiful natural environment of Mirpur, the capital Dhaka. The journey of the zoo in Bangladesh began in 1950 with a small number of wild animals in the Dhaka High Court premises for the purpose of public entertainment, conservation of animal diversity, breeding, research and increasing knowledge about wildlife. Later, in 1960, an initiative was taken to establish a zoo in Mirpur and the current Bangladesh National Zoo was opened to the public on June 23, 1974.
Although the main attraction of the Bangladesh National Zoo, which is about 75 hectares in area, is the world’s famous Royal Bengal Tiger, there are 2,150 domestic and foreign animals of 191 species here. Among them are chitra deer, monkeys, nilgai, lions, hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, bears, lions, crocodiles, zebras, flamingos, kanibok, pankauri and fish rang. And the zoological museum has about 240 species of stuffed animals. In addition, there are two lakes spread over an area of 13 hectares in the Bangladesh National Zoo.
Opening and closing schedule
The National Zoo is closed every Sunday. However, if Sunday is a public holiday, the zoo is open on that Sunday. It is open from 9 am to 6 pm during the summer (April-October) and from 8 am to 5 pm during the winter (November-March).
Entry ticket price
The ticket price for anyone above two years of age to enter the main gate is 50 taka. The ticket price for entering the Zoological Museum is 10 taka. No ticket is required for children under two years of age. In addition, the entry ticket price is half the price for school, college and university students. In that case, the ID card of their educational institution must be shown.
Picnic spot rental: The picnic spot named Utsav and Nijhum will cost 10,000 and 6,000 taka respectively to rent for the whole day.
Car parking fee: 40 taka for buses, trucks, minibuses. Parking fee for microbuses, taxis, jeeps, private cars, pick-ups is 20 taka. 10 taka for CNG, tempu, motorcycles, etc. 2 taka parking fee for rickshaws, bicycles, etc.
How to get there
Buses ply to Bangladesh National Zoo from various places in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. You can also go to the zoo by renting your own transport, taxi, CNG or private car.
Where to eat
There are several food shops in front of the zoo, if you want, you can eat there. However, be sure to check the price of the food before eating.
